I'll go with Doug as that makes sense, plus the Astra is 17 I think so would be surprised if it was higher or the same.

Ok question for you all... how does this Insurance Group work? Just so as that i can briefly understand. I always hear them talking about it on Top Gear and never get it lol. Obviously I'm in Australia... and it works totally different here. You start on Rating 6, if you dont have an accident you end up on Rating 1. All that happens if you buy a turbo... or a VXR for example, is they put like an extra premium on it. Perfect example... quote for me (21yo) for a 2006 Peugot 206 GTi 180 was $1000. If I went for an Astra SRi (very similar power to weight, yet a turbo) $1600 and a lower rating!! How do you guys compare? I know it's a subtopic, but yeah...

So why does the Corsa come out at 16 when the Meriva VXR is 12?
This will certainly put some people off - especially when you can get the flying Astra VXR for group 17
Certainly think that at group 16 - the insurance companies are taking the pee !
Especially when Clio is 197 bhp and group 15
This may be Vauxhalls loss- it is up to them to make sure that the car comes out with a low insurance rating - so why the jump between Meriva and Corsa?

the insurance is based on the power, speed, stealability, price, how much it would cost to repair (probably the main thing). many things really.
for example, a good group 2 insurance car is a ford ka, seat arosa (cheapish to buy, maintain and repair. not overly desired by theives)
and family saloon comes in somewhere between group 8 and 13
the astra vxr is a 17e
and then ferraris, TVRs etc etc... come in a different stages of the group 20.
it has nothing to do with the driver, although, experienced, older drivers who live in the middle of nowhere will get a lower premium on a group 20 car than say a 21 year old living in central london with 6 points on their license.
the insurance group of the corsa wont be decided by vauxhall. it will be decided by the insurance companies
