I'd be interested in knowing this to Steve. So, if there are any computer boffins (note I didn't say the g**k word:lol:) that could pop in and let us know we'd both be grateful.

Photoshop has changed many many time now, i used 6,7 CS2 and now CS3 as well as Coral Draw X4.
Depends what level you are starting at, but to be honest unless you go to say evening class on creative design etc or are good with self teach then most people find it hard to understand as you use layers. If you imagine layers are sets of clothes that you put on top of each other, each one doing something different that you control. Like a lot of people on here i learnt myself over the past 8-9 years now, it's a hobby and thats it, if i can help others then i will, so as for your question the cheapest option would be p/s 7 (which was a good one), but if i'm honest, i still have cs2 on my laptop and cs3 on my desktop....... think i prefere cs2 m8

It's just the new version of p/shop.....Photoshop CS2 or 3. They host a load of new features, they are really good, but takes a while to get your head round some changes they made, it now has a bridge (brings you to your pics and sits in the background) but i feel it takes to long to load, so i've disabled it. To start with try and but a cheap second hand copy of P/Shop 7, wont cost a lot as it's old, but will get you started, then use this site to help you

You can get anything from the net, everyone knows that, even VXR's lol
An honest copy of P/Shop costs, and it's big money, or you can use elements, a cut down version, i've not used it but been told its good and it's cheaper (think about £70)

photoshop is one of the best granted. but it has too much for the stuff that i want to do. i dont need all of the packages and i think that it could be more user friendly, i prefer using fireworks. works a treat and is so easy to use! :)
i use the 8th version :):)

Use Photoshop CS myself, and I really rate it. 8)
I started off a few years ago, using Paint Shop Pro, which is also quite good, but eventually bought Photoshop, and now I wouldn`t go back.
I would, however, use anything else, in tandem, to help out.
Again, it`s just a hobby for me too, but when you look at some of the stuff that`s out there on the `net, then I feel like an absolute beginner.
I also think that it helps, with a lot of this stuff, if you can draw (well) to start off with. Unfortunately I can`t, but when that`s the case, you just have to let the technology make up for it for you............:(

I suppose it depends on which version you learned, the lower the version or "CS" then the faster they wil run.

:grin:Ive been very lucky not to have to pay for my Photoshop software so have both PS7 and CS3! CS3 is definitely easier to use and has a better range of easily accessible features! Ive never really used any others!

anyone who wants a free version use paint.net
basically the same as p/s 7 just you have to download all the features (very straightforward tho)
