I've just bought a dual action polisher it's not as easy as you think to take a layer of the clear coat away (to remove light scratches)

The rate of clear coat shaved is extremely minimal. You'll be fine. Most da polishers take an age to properly correct paint anyway.

Don't guess it, a paint guage is your best friend, a da can do some serious damage with the right pad and hard cut compound
Best advice is to watch junkman on you tube , get the technique correct and you will be able to correct the swirls with the a good polish.
The paint on the J is no thinner than any other Vauxhall about 100um on the roof and 140-160um on the rest off the body work.
Megs UC and a white hexlogic pad will safely remove swirls .
megs ultimate compound and megs 205 , Chemical guys white and black pads are all you need to start with.
