    Thumbs down M32 Help - How long do I have left?

    Hi guys,

    I noticed on Tuesday I heard a dreaded whine in my chocolate gearbox. Its super faint - can't even hear it with heater on 1. But its whineing in 5th and 6th and notches the gearstick a few mm in first only. But what I'm wondering is how long do I have before its goosed? Will it slowly deteriorate or will it stay like this if its not abused? (not that it was anyway)

    Thanks and sorry if this has been answered somewhere else, I couldnt find the answer!

    I'm sure people can go years like this change the gearbox oil can sort it if you catch it early . But I'm sure also that's they can go just like that too

    Oil change will help.

    If it doesn't you need to weigh up the options of leave it vs fix it;

    Leave it:
    - May last until you sell the car saving money.
    or
    - May break completely, possibly at seriously inconvenient time and cost way more than if you just had the bearings replaced in the first place.

    Fix it:
    - Will cost.
    - Will be reliable (!) afterwards.

    If you don't rely on the car daily i'd be inclined to leave it a bit yet...

    Thanks u33db

    And it is my daily... about 200 miles a week. Couldn't come at a worst time as I'm paying for a holiday at the moment. Gonna change the oil and hope for the best while saving what I can. If it lasts I might be able to save up for a LSD upgrade while its out!

    Any recommendations on what oil to get?

    Mate you are fooling your self if you think an oil change is going to sort you out here. You just need to get it booked in for a refurb. You are literally throwing 30-50 quid down the toilet changing the oil

    I'd personally be getting it booked ASAP, oil change or not 👍🏻

    Rubbish.

    Hes only got a few mm movement in 1st and whose to say that isn't just down to engine movement. Mine moves about that under hard acceleration and i've got no whining or anything.

    I don't doubt there will be a box issue but don't freak the lad into thinking its going to expire imminently.

    WGM state that really bad boxes will move up to 2cm in 1st so its clearly not an imminent failure if hes got a 10th of that;

    i'd definitely change to box oil...best case it prolongs it a good while and saves £700, worse case it's only £30 gone.
