Default Doing Gearbox Bearings in Situ?

    Hi,

I think my gearbox bearing are starting to play up.

No gearstick play but there seems to be a whining in 2nd and 3rd, also a clunk going into gear sometimes from neutral

    Its on 42k.

I've read that some of the bearings (6th) can be done in situ...has anyone done this or can offer a rough guide?

Yeah, but just the 6th gear one as it seems to be the common one.

If it needs any of the others i'd take the box out and drop it off somewhere.

    support engine
    remove gearbox mount
remover the mount of the top of the gearbox
    drain oil
    lower box slightly
undo all trox bolts holding casing on
tap casing to break the seal then after lowing box some more slide it out
push selector shafts back into box as they can come out with casing
    remove circlip pull off bearing
    fit new bearing
clean out end casing remove old bearing casing refit new one
best to change all 3 bearings whilst you are there
clean off sealant of casing reapply some new
    refit casing
    top up fluid

can buy a 3 piece bearing kit off ebay for around £55 hth

BTW is the any torque values for the end case?

Assume as its got sealant it'll be fairly low like doing a sump so ~12 Nm

    Update on this;

I have attempted to do this today and have got most of the way there...i've got the end case off without any real problem and have managed to pull off the 6th gear (i think) bearing so far .

Problem is getting the new bearing on...i've got it flush with the end of the shaft but cant get it pushed any further than that to get the circip back on

I've read on the fiat forum that some guy used his puller to push the bearing back on so i'm guessing i have the wrong puller? Mine is just a 3 claw one so i'm guessing the one that guy used perhaps screwed to the bellhousing and could be used as a pusher.

Obviously now i'm going to have to go buy the tool...can any suggest which one to get?

I don't want to try a BFH on the new bearing in case i damage it.

    Help appreciated.
