Default New to here and need advice on my paintwork please?!

    Hi

I’m new to here and need some advice if possible please?

We have an Arden Blue Astra VXR and we have a serious amount of stone chips all over the car. All over the bonet, roof, and both sides of the car. The bumper is the only part chip free! We have been back to the dealer but they don’t want to know, apparently it’s just wear and tear. I’ve since spoken to 2 separate independent bodyshops and they have pointed out that the chips are only on the metal panels and both believe from just looking at the car it must be an issue with the base coat and primer coming into contact with the metal panel. Neither were keen to take my money to repair my car and insisted this is likely to be a Vauxhall issue! The plastic number etc. is still pristine and they’d have expected to see stone chips on that too if it is standard wear and tear.

I’m just wondering if anyone else has come across this before?

    Thanks for reading!

    Hello,

There was definitely an issue with some of the older ones (i.e. 2012 production) having soft paint from factory and I believe the ardens were particularly bad for it. If you search on here or do a Google search for something like “Astra J VXR paint chips” you should get some of the older posts up for more info/evidence.

So it depends on how old your one is, but I was under the impression they had pretty much sorted them by now as the original owners (presumably you’re not the first owner) should have had the work done already. I brought a 2013 in white and didn’t realise at the time but later noticed it was resprayed almost everywhere which indicates it suffered quite badly with the paint problem (or it had been smashed to pieces lol).

So yes, if that’s what you’re suffering with on an early production car, then technically Vauxhall/Main Dealer should be respraying the affected panel. I would also recommend getting some front mud flaps to save the doors as the door shape welcomes stone chips

    Default Thankyou

Thankyou for the advice! Yes it’s a 62 plate one so sounds like that could be our problem with soft paint.

    Thankyou again!

I got my 62 plate Arden fully resprayed and 3 new alloys from the dealer when I had it, just have to be persistent, there was a massive thread about paint issues on here, give it a search and see what others have done to get theirs sorted.

However having not had a GTC VXR for a while I can’t remember the paintwork guarantee from manufacturer, think most are like 3-5 years so could be difficult if that’s the case!

Enjoy the car whatever you choose to do with the paint. I’ve had 3 and miss them like crazy, you’d regret it if you get rid!

Thanks bks for coming back to me.

The dealer has repeatedly denied their being a problem with it but we’ve taken it to yet another independent body shop and they are happy to write letters about the poor quality from a Vauxhall. I think this will be our next route, gathering statements from various body shops and persisting with Vauxhall.

If you do a search in here there is a very long thread on paint issues, I remember reading bits of it and there were plenty getting the cars painted free of charge, hth.

Worth possibly getting in touch with those members and building a case to present to vauxhall.

I doubt vauxhall will entertain any warranty with regards to this due to it having previous owners and several years old. Usually paint warranties are only for the first year.
You would be better contacting vauxhall customer service rather than dealers as the latter can only act if given the ok from vauxhall.

You will get no where with Vauxhall as the car is six and half years old, paint had one year warranty and six years anti perforation warranty. I have a 62 plate white vxr, & that is not to bad for chips but has had mud flaps since three months old. The problem with the Ardens is the flake not sticking to the primer, and when the clear coat gets damaged it falls away showing the white primer below. The bumpers being plastic use a different primer so don't suffer the same.
