astra J VXR front brake costs

hi all. i read that the main dealer price of replacing the front discs and pads is towards £1600. Even though I accept that this is a bargain price for what they have to do to replace the discs and pads (taking the p**s obviously) can anyone explain what the disc assembly is about ?? I am more used to the normal, hub mounted disc, which is probably more like £50. I dont follow what such a complex assembly is all about. There is obviously a good reason for the complex assembly but an explanation would be nice !!

Luckily my car came with brand new front discs and Brembo pads and a "don't forget to bed them in ". I replaced the rears 6 months ago with 'another' make - reasonable price.

Ta for the info. I have had a quick look at the drawings and they are as I imagined. I will print them off at work on Monday and have a read. I didn't realise the disks themselves were brembo as well. I thought it was just the calipers. Things have moved on since I bought my Triumph Herald in 1974!

Yes, having solid discs just at the front on a Saab 96, seemed sophisticated after drum brakes all round on my first car, a Wolseley 1500.

It amazes me that floating composite discs work at all with the disc able to move relative to the hub, but they seem to work very well.
