  • Big turbo / Small turbo

There have been a lot of talk about how the big turbo's are they way forward, so I looked at a dyno sheet there was posted yesterday and compared it with mine to see how good the BIG one's are?

Depends where you want to keep the revs.

If you are between 5,550 and 7,500 revs most of the time (which with the ratio's is more than possible) then I'd go for the big one. The only reason carmads figures don't go above 6,500 is that it's a freshly built engine (If I remember the thread correctly) so would (being a bigger turbo) still be pushing approximately 400BHP at 7,500 with the associated larger amount of torque at the same revs.

That said, yours would be an easier car to drive!!
Sold - Arden Blue Astra VXR on 19's
Ordered - Pure White Golf GTI on 18's (couldn't stomach paying for 19" tyres any more!)

That's some good work you have done bo.

But on paper things will be miles apart. on the road will be a different story.

another example is to look at road going cars for instance.. 2005 model seat leon cupra has a ko3 turbo that is very small and the car specs show 0-60 in 7.0secs and 180bhp.....leon cupra R has ko4 turbo which is bigger and does 0-60 6.4secs and 225bhp

another same example is 2008 model evo fq300 has small turbo and comes no where near a evo fq400, huge turbo in terms of performance.

You will need to compare such cars, turbo's on the road or track to get a definitive answer.

bet the ed30 turbo is bigger than you get in the normal golf gti too?

but it does highlight bigger is not always better

getting the right threshold for the job in hand is what counts

i believe the leargerflexability of the smaller turbo is what gave bo the advantage to show up huge bhp cars on the technicle tracks! this may not be the case at the likes of thruxton/ snetterton
