  • Blue Smoke, Loss of Vacuum, Loss of Boost, Emissions Light....Next..? Help

    Hi Guru's,

I bought a VXR about 3 weeks and ignored my instincts to stay away due to the dark looks from the Racing Edition trim.... The car has 68k which is quite high for a 56 plate so I immediately had a full service and cam belt change from Vauxhall...
I started noticing blue smoke, usually evident when running from cold which I know is probably due to the oil seals going and a direct result from no back pressure from the Remus Exhaust.....?
I then had a mate look at the emissions light code which I was told was on due to the Remus de-cated System being on it....He agreed it was prob due to the missing cat and said a re-map would sort it....??
The boost gauge that sits on the dash at idle always sat at -30psi.... After a hard driven weekend it now sits at -15psi and it seems a little slower and doesn't boost until around 2800rpm...??

Are all these symptoms related and is there an easy solution....?
    New Turbo perhaps?
Would a Stage 1 conversion sort the emissions light and stop it looking for the lamda sensors?
    How concerned should I be?

    Cheers,

    Chris

Firstly welcome to the site, enjoy the ride !

With regards the car, think you may need it looking over by a VXR specialist - where is your nearest ??

If it is the seals, you could have your Turbo sent away to TT by Regal, MPG, TMS, Courts etc and have the seals replaced and also at the sametime have the uprated bearing put in (360degree instead of the current 270) That will set you back getting close to £400.00 iirc. Then you have fitting ontop.

In comparison most VXR tuners iirc charge around £ 850 + fitting for a new turbo + fitting, but remember the new turbo will have the same std seals and the old type thrust 270degree bearing if I have been listening correctly. Then it maybe also be prudent to get yourself a Percy banjo Oil bolt, these lower the oil pressure to the turbo, but keeps the pressure up to the engine, thus equalising the back pressure issue with larger bore exhausts.

All you would need to decide is, whether its better to get brand new or repair ?

Anyway, hope that helps to a certain degree ?

so is it a remus exhaust you have? they are supposed to have a 100cell cat and they dont come decatted, if you got it remapped then it should get rid of that code, as the emissions parametters just need widened when fitting an aftermarket exhaust,

blue smoke is defo not a good sign, getting a oil restrictor bolt will stop it getting worse but wont cure the problem, it could be a sign of the turbo on its way out, could be a good time to get in on that hybrid turbo group buy and just send your turbo away in return,
      Quaife LSD . . Milltek/Powerflow Turbo back exhaust . . Custom Intercooler . . Percy 1.9 Cdti airbox . . Whiteline RARB . . Collins dump valve . . Courts enlarged top hat/power pipe . . Oil Breather Box . . cruise . . anti-hijack . . check control . . Blue SMD conversion . . wind deflectors . . opel numberplate surrounds . . pressed plates . .

but when he sent his turbo to aet ad the checked it and it was faulty he would get the 400 odd quid surcharg

As above really, not much more that can be added, is there a lot of smoke? Blue smoke is oil burning, but I'm just wondering if the seals have gone and its spunked oil thru your exhaust destroying the cat, thus bringing on your emission light?

You really need to get the oil leak found and repaired firstly, depending what is leaking depends entirely on what you will need to change, can't really tell you to change this that and the next thing without seeing the car but an oil restrictor is a must on these machines imo,

The fact that you have lost 15psi vacuum is suspicious, but I don't know enough on the astra engine values too comment, do you know if the car is running any tuning?

            Goodpoint !

Easy to findout, get your car in 4th at a reasonable speed, then with your gas foot steady PRESS the sports button - if your car leaps forward - its mapped, if not its standard.

if he only has some blue smoke it will be because of some oil leaking throught the seals onto the exhaust and burning, but when they check the turbo it will still be fine and working

Cheeers for the advice..... I think my neareast may be MPG but Im not 100% sure.. I live in Middlesbrough...?
Also, I said it had a Remus as that was what I was told by the guy from Keighley Motorsports in Bradford where I bought it.... You are absolutely right in that if it was a Remus it would have a 100 cell cat, and also I would imagine it would have a nice shiny imprint on the top of the back box saying "Remus" which mine doesn't...... so i've obv been and had my eyes out..... I guess it's probably just had a de-cat pipe fitted... serves me right for impulse buying i guess......

I know a guy who's a whizz with Turbo's and has said he can recondition my turbo and add a 360 seal so I think thats my next step....followed by a restrictor bolt....
Also in response to whether its running any tuning, it does pull a little when driving steady in 4th and pressing the sports button, so does that suggest some mapping??

I'm so angry i jumped in without knowing too much.... Hope people learn from my misfortune lol....

i think it could be the valve stem seals or turbo, what are you boosting at when on boost? how much did you pay for the car if you dont mind me asking ..

Technically the guy wasn't lying as the standard system is also remus just not the sport system

Boosts at about 9psi...... I paid 9,200 for it.... he blagged me saying it had the £1500 Remus system..... so i bought it as he made out standard VXR's go for that price n I was getting a bargain.....

Do u reckon i have grounds for contesting the sale and seeing about compensation??

Hi and welcome to the online forum.

Not the best way to introduce yourself but at least your getting good advice.
It's really bad when garages treat ppl like you have been treated,
I think if I was you I would take the car back to get the garage to put the problem you have right or get your money back.

you have the law on your side in that the car is not fit for purpose,
as the price you have quoted you paid IMO is right at the top of it's value in A1 condition and not with the problems you have, with different exhaust to what you where told.

I hope it all works out for you good luck.
                            Would like to do more,

Milltek cat back, Whiteline RARB, Cruise Control, Light & Sight Pack, Parrot Blue Tooth Hands free Phone Connection & both rear fog lights working
