  • Gearbox whine???

Noticed this the other day when driving with the windows down after all this nice weather we have been getting recently, shifted down from 5th to 2nd to go up a hill and there was a crazy whining noise as the revs came down

Only noticed it in 2nd gear so been going round a lot of corners in 3rd

    Anyone experienced these symptoms?

You mean you shifted down from 5th to 2nd in one shift to go up an hill - no wonder you have an issue

Indeed, drop a gear at a time and give the box half a chance.

I've only been driving a few years, and this (block changing) is the way that I was taught by my instructor, and the method which I was expected to demonstrate on my test.

In real-life day-to-day driving I go down the gearbox to make use of engine braking (drummed into me by my wife and father-in-law), and to have a bit more mechanical sympathy.

But block changing is the way that's being taught now though...
