    It gets worse than that.

New BMW 135 is coming. I understand it is 300bhp through the rear wheels.

The 135 I can live with, that will be a 3.5 straight 6 and its hardly a real hot hatch, more of a mini estate. It is a different type of vehicle.

The S3 is going to fo head to head with our babies. Yes it is alot more expensive, but it has the same genetic make up as the Astra in terms of class and engine spec.

Spend half the difference in price on upgrades and you will be quicker than most things!!
            Insignia VXR, quite nippy!

An estate????? It has a tiny boot and the last time I saw one it was a small 5 door hatchback (soon to be 3). An Audi A3 Sportback is more of a small estate.

But what do I know, apparantly I can't tell the difference between a fake S4 and a real one.

Different class of car completely, tooo much cash for what it/they are .. I love the S3, but couldn`t afford to buy or run one so thats the end of that ??

Totally agree, different price bracket, different class. I didnt buy the VXR because of the performance figures. Its a good all round hot hatch, pretty quick, good to look at and well priced. I was still under 20k with the stage 2 so i reckon ive got the best of both worlds.

Audi will be asking £26,995 for it.

                    and i'm not worried.

BMW 135. Again no probs. A 330 CI is no match for a VXR. A mate has a 535 24v VVTI with a flowed exhaust map and a air filter and he cant keep with me when hes in sport.

You'll see what we mean when you get your's bro.

I still think, go out with 19k in your back pocket and look for a hot hatch, you will come back with a vxr, another 8k and you won`t but who cares.. Under 20k for a 155mph car which turns heads, can sit 5 people and you can insure it as well ... It`s a no brainer for me !!!

stealth no more but beware of the silver lightning GSI with vxr power

for coulpe g's more say 32k, me and the missus could both have a VXR

also, ive heard from a few friends audi cost a bomb to service.......

Interesting replies, especially about the 535 24 valve! Theres no question the VXR is an awesome car, it woul d juts be nice ot think it could sit at the peak of hot hatches unrivalled forever. Still, an engine is only as good as its driver, so even if the S3 is quicker off the mark, the estate agent driving it probably won't be able to acheive it anyway.

Catherine, why are you so venemous?

agree with all said so far - VXR parked in my works car still brings a smile every time I glance it and think of the take off sound when pushing a bit.
The Astra VXR is greater than the sum of it's parts and I get the same buzz as I did when the Escort Mk2 RS1800 came along. That car is still a classis. Newer and better cars will always come and go, but the true classics remain. I think Vauxhal have done a Chevette HSR, Firenza Droopsnoot, yet again - a future classic.

                              Still grinning all day long
