Just want as many views as possible, its the age old V Power vx Tesco 99 debate.

I have run the car on V Power from new until around 2600 miles. I ran the tank down to about !!!Range = 4 miles!!!, red light flashing, and filled it up the brim with Tesco 99. I know your supposed to wait a couple of tankfuls but so far two observations:

    1) My MPG has dropped from 22.9 to 19.4 mpg. It was down at 17 and then slowly rose. What does this suggest?

    2) The car seems ever so slightly lacking. I dont know whether this is because subconciously I want to believe V Power is better, or whether it is actually faster, or slower. Just does not feel as "mighty".

    Thoughts?

I have run 99T from day one on the car - due to locations I have filled up with V power and also BP Ultimate.

Tesco - I get good MPG and find that my car performs the best on this.

BP Ultimate - Gave me the best MPG but found it more sluggish and felt like it was lacking.

V Power - I had lower MPG then tesco and also again felt lacking in the lower revs.

I do believe it depends on your driving technique, roads you use and types of journeys, also if you have any maps etc to the car.

Do you think you have made these observations too soon as doesnt it take a couple of tank fulls for the ecu to callibrate itself correctly?

I dont think there would be any real difference and the fact your mpg has one down doesnt really prove anything PD, so many factors with driving style and condition etc it would be an impossible comparison. Also like you said it was your 1st tank so it proably wouldnt have kicked in anyway.

Can there be a link here with what the car first mapped itself to? i.e as V Power was the forst performance fuel could it have a muscle memory in favour of it in the ECU?

It'll take a while for the ECU to adjust to the new fuel parameters (good or bad). Same applies with remaps to some extent.

Perforamnce Ford (magazine) conducted just such a test using a rolling road and an Escort RS turbo. If memory serves correct, Tesco 99 came in 3rd, Shell Optimax 2nd and BP Ultimate in 1st (not the 102 RON)

From personal experience (14 turbo cars) I've never noticed much difference between the three tbh. Though I've heard that Tesco just bump up their normal budget fuel with additives to get the 99 RON, whereas BP & Shell's performance brands were created through years of R&D and refinement.

Ouch... Really should be running on higher octane fuel than that... When my dealership handed over the keys to my brand new vxr, the salesman said, 'I've stuck 20 quid of unleaded in there for you'... Yeah, ninety bloody five octane, thanks. That was the last time she drank that stuff...
