standard Dot 4 for me, 5.1 is ok if you are on the track and changing it every few months. But for my road car I am happy to use the normal road spec fluid and change it every 2 years

Yeah, take it that the standard vauxhall stuff. But surely Ap 5.1 doesn't need changing every few months?

the higher the dot number the more frequent the fluid needs changing due to the fact that is has a higher hydoscopy (not sure if I just made that word up!!!). So the higher the number the more water the fluid can retain. When brake fluid is heated it still does it's job well. When brake fluid + water is heated the water boils and turns to steam but condenses straight back to water when it cools. When it is steam you get compression in the brake lines (spongy pedal). Therefore you need to change it more often. Read the packet it comes in. Also always buy brake fluid in a metal can not a plastic one. Plastic bottles often have no seal under the cap so are absorbing water from the atmosphere from the day there are made. Metal cans (namely Castrol and other big brands) are put in metal cans with a rubber seal on the cap to stop any air being allowed to come in contact with the fluid until the seal is opened

I hope that clears it up

you would be better off keeping your brake fluid standard and changing the brake lines to the braided type, there's no need to upgrade brake fluid for road use

How often do you change you brake fluid Daz? I've just bought some 5.1 but don't really want to change it every few months.
