  • astra vxr v vectra vxr

reading the new vxr brochure [2007 edt 2] page 35 it boasts vectra vxr
50-70 mph in 7.6 secs in fifth gear, didnt seem that good ,so i dug out
autocar [23 aug 2005] astra vxr full road test, and the astra does the same burst in 5.3, is it a printing error in the the vxr brochure or is the astra over 2 seconds faster, that would be the 280 ps model as well ?????

I oftren wonder the same thing. The Vectra has a larger engine but is much bigger and heavier.

Power to weight ratio would probably explain it, however would be interesting to see what the times would be for the 340 Vectra VXR - or one with a different final drive ratio.....

I'm guessing that 5th gear in the Vectra, the engine is turning much lower rpm's, which wouldn't help.

A 50-70 test using 3rd gear would be much more interesting !

autocar did 50-70 in 3.1 secs in 3rd gear,
not sure on the vectra time?
but if the vectra time[50-70 in 5th] is not that
impressive why do vauxhall shout about it in the
          latest vxr brochure?

Because most people at these speeds will be in 5th gear odd and will want to just put their foot down opposed to knocking it down a few gears.

50-70mph is a commen quoted figure.

what i mean is the vectra figure is not very impressive
so why advertise it in the new brochure

Why not compare the Vectra's 50-70 figure against a like for like competitor (eg Mondeo, Passat, etc), might put it more in perspective.

Only seems fair as against Astra, Focus, etc it's the weight that makes the difference. Have checked fords site and they only quote the 32-62mph figures for the Mondeo in fifth so not sure might have to do some trawling to pick up proper comparison but think you'll find compared to others that the Veccies 50-70 is actually very good.

Don't forget that the Vectra is a) heavier and b) has approx 1% longer gearing than the Astra.

The measurement is a std one for all our cars.

                            Gearing makes a difference.

I raced by brother when i had my tigra (1.8 128bhp full stainless exhaust) against by brothers astra g (1.8 125bhp). although i was quicker off the mark when on the motorway he quite happily overtook me.
