No very non confused cdc suspension settings have an effect on how well tyres and tarmac stay together

Hope you're not confusing the CDC part of the IDS system with the ESP system, which would be the one that is more likely to kick in to 'keep you on the road', there's a button to turn that feature off which reassuringly shows a light on the dash of a car skidding about, so you can try that if you feel like testing out whether it's the computer or your driving skill that's keeping you on the road, I do remember the vauxhall salesman begging me to leave this alone though!

Pressing the Sport Switch activates the CDC function
This bit is incorrect though, good ole marketing lol
The CDC system is active from when you start driving and performs as described; Pressing the sports button forces the suspension into a fixed, much harder setting... for enthusiastic driving
Do you know this for a fact (i.e. you work for VXL)? Or is this just an opinion? No offence, just curious!

No problem, I did know this for a fact...sadly!
Another useless fact is that the Vectra IDS+ system uses 2 separate processing units which marketing announced as next generation CDC but twice the computing power is required simply because the chassis is much harder to keep on the road than the astras....think its what they call spin

Quote from my vectra's owner's manual:
"Continuous Damping Control is always in normal mode with the ignition is switched on. If desired the system can be switched to SPORT mode.
In SPORT mode, parameters such as damping control are adapted to a sportier driving style, with a 'harder' chassis calibration."

For a rather less complicated explanation, here's the Vauxhall marketing blurb for it:
IDS-plus with Continuous Damping Control (CDC)
The Interactive Driving System (IDS-plus) chassis – available
on SRi, Design and VXR models – offers the Astra driver an even more
sporting driving experience, thanks mainly to the electronic control
of the suspension. Pressing the Sport Switch activates the CDC
function – CDC monitors the roll, pitch and yaw of the car, and
changes the rate of damping on each wheel to optimise the
handling, effectively stiffening the suspension – but selectively.
This means the vehicle will exhibit a reduced rate of roll and pitch,
making it more responsive during direction changes and more
settled during the braking/turn-in/acceleration transition when
cornering. CDC is a major breakthrough in the Astra segment.
