  • is it only damage limitation with swirls?

my astra vxr is just over 2 months old and has been cleaned only 4 times now.i`ve just seen the car under a flood light and its full of swirls!
i thought i was washing the thing correctly,ie the 2 bucket method, rinsing the car thoroughly my lambs wool mit after every dunk in bucket.sure you can not add as many by following the correct method, but
i think im starting to relise its impossible to regularly wash the car without adding swirls

surely a quick jet wash during the winter is going to cause less damage?

Hence my regular jet wash crapoff, followed by a clean at home!

im sure that as long as your carefull with a jet wash your not going to scratch it.
if it did damage it then imagine the scratchs from driving in the rain on a motorway at 70

i might stop washing the car for a bit,i get frustrated when i start to see light scratchs after only owning for 2 months.it seems rubbing the car with anything is going to create some swirls

thanks to the weather the car only stays clean for a day anyway.
im thinking that spending 2-3 hours cleaning the car is totally pointless as within a day or 2 it looks mucky again.

        Were the swirls already there?

Not uncommon from dealerships from new hence my dealership know not to wash or touch car upon arrival!! Not that i am implying my dealership would or could do that just rather give first clean myself!!

Like marc says I wouldn't be surprised if there were there from dealership as I've the same and pretty sure that's where they've come from. Like yourself gonna wait until longer days and better weather then I'll go through the whole swirl removal process. until then I'll still do my best to clean it in a good manner so's not to introduce more or deeper swirls.

My car arrived and had swirls already on the paintwork, it is very common these days.

I would suggest washing off with a jetwash before using the 2 bucket method as this will help to remove most major contaminants first

even using the 2 bucket method and rinsing my mit after dunking in the first bucket i still see grit and muck in the bucket containing shampoo.
some of that grit must still be on the mit.
does anybody know of a link to any sort of test on a jetwash(does it,does it not cause scratchs)?

No a jet wash cannot cause swirls as swirls are physical abrasions on the paintwork normally in circular motions:

                    Thats why

                    1. i use grit guards and

                    2. i use zymol sponges!! and always work in straight lines!!

If you still have grit in your Mitt you must rinse the Mitt better or you need a better Mitt, if rinsed correctly your soapy water will remain clean and grit free.
Always jet wash car off first is also a very good idea

                        hi marc.
do you get any swirls(or straight line scratchs ) when cleaning?

how easy is it to remove the swirls by hand on an arden blue astra?
what would be the best product to use?

                        slightly off topic.
i really like the deep gloss look on cars,is there any one product that is better than the rest for achieving the shiny gloss look im after?

This is such a hard question to answer really but no i generally dont get swirls on any of my cars ive had but IM METICULOUS and some may say mad when doing a car wash or detail........

I always finish my car in reverse osmosis water.....Full stop!

I always use 2 bucket method....

                          I never use cheap products..

I would never ever use car wash , jet wash brush etc as it only takes one time and hey presto swirls!!!

With regards to scratches scratch x is a good product from megs but time consuming by hand.

This is a photo of an old bmw 3 series coupe i had for 9 years. The photos were taken week before i sold it and it did not have a scratch or swirl on it...

With regards to wax etc for Arden blue i have asked the same questions for when mine arrives....

I will be going the zymol route simply because i love carnauba over synthetic although at the moment i have zymol concours the vxr will have something more special applied....

But it really depends what look you are after???

To simplify in my own terms and i am no expert....

                          Carnauba route :

With carnauba waxes the end result is an extremely glossy finish which will really bring out the relative hue and richness of the paintwork , reds will always look a lot better with carnauba and will give a wet look to the paint surface....the paintwork also seems to glow on my cars therefore this is my preferred route when detailing hence zymol.
The down side to carnauba is a limited depth when looking into the paintwork and also the wax does not last anywhere as long as a sealent and may need to be reapplied every 6 weeks at a guess!!!

                          Synthetic sealent :

There are loads of sealents on the market now and megs make a range that alot of people use on here nxt gen....
The plus points of sealents are that they last alot longer than carnauba waxes possibly upto 6 months without reapplying and the traits of a synthetic sealent are shine and massive depth of clarity.....i.e you can see massive detail of reflection in the paintwork but at the cost of glossiness........I can only describe the end result as looking a touch plastic in my opinion but massively shiny........Sealents also highlight defects in the paintwork whereas carnauba waxes hide them....

You can clean the paintwork and apply a sealent and then leave 24 hours and put a carnauba wax over the top as this has a bit of both benefits but some products are fussy about what will bond with what....

So to sum up decide what route you want to go...

I would personally try the new Zymol introduction kits which consist of zymol wax , zymol microwipe , hd-cleanse (which is the best on the market in my opinion) and pre wax applicator.........Hd cleanse on its own is £24 so this is a bargain......they wont last long!!!

Marc, you are definately gonna have to give me some tips and pointers!

And i too seem to have some swirls, not that bad tho, mainly on the bonnet when you look at it under a light. I was considering Using a bit of Autoglym Super Resin on a PC??
