  • Need a new laptop - PC or Mac? Opinions wanted

    Afternoon all,

    As above…

My laptops just broken a week or so ago, and to repair it is going to be £150-200 so Id rather buy a new one as its already 4/5 years old. My question is, which Laptop OR MacBook?...I appreciate I’m going to start a possible war, but I want to hear first hand from people who have switched from Laptop to Mac and vice versa. Im looking at either the MacBook (white one) or the MacBook Pro.

Things to note, im not a PC gamer in any way – I have both 360 and PS3 so im not interested in PC gaming. I purely want a new laptop for downloading, surfing and music

    Thanks all
    Dan

Try a macbook pro, no slow down, no virus's, good support and easy to use, just cost a bomb and not so good at gaming. (option to dual boot to Windows too)

Other than that I can recommend Dell laptops too, They are well built and you can configure the spec to suit your budget.

I bought a new macbook last year, had duel boot so I could run vista etc, upgraded my ram and harddrive to like 320gb, spent around £1000 and had the laptop for about 3 months before selling it mate.

Personally dont like it mate, nice laptops but for the price I didn't think it was worth the money really, sold it. Good if your a graphics designer but even then doesnt do anything a windows 7 laptop wouldn't do.

Luckily for christmas my girlfriend just bought me a new laptop, i've got a sony vaio one -windows 7 with a 500gb harddrive and 4 gb ram. Much prefer it, so much nicer to use and feels smoother.

My household still has a mac but overall i'd stick with windows, I think for the price you get more for your money.

i am looking at getting a Dell Studio XPS16 in the next month or so, as said before you can pick which cpu and ram it has depending on your budget and needs. Best bang for your buck as far as i can tell. They use the Intel I5 or I7 depending how you spec it up.

Changed from PC to MAC this year and loving it. As I use it for work it has made life easier when connecting to networks etc. It took a bit to get used to the way mac does things but way better once you do. I left my 15" macbook pro with just the apple software as didn't see the point in paying all that money just to run windows again. faster boot up times no virus protection required unless you want to protect your friends pc's when pass attachments on via email. My wife still has a HP laptop and she is already asking for an upgrade to a macbook pro......might have to get her one for her birthday....

i tend to stick with HP

mac book pros are nice, but not worth the money if you "purely want a new laptop for downloading, surfing and music" imo. any modern laptop can do this with ease.

                        dont forget....
macs are worth the money if you watch porn or download from non secure sites spam\spyware\malware, is the most common way of attack and causes nothing but grief for a user.

MACs can get virus's its just that they dont as the majority of the world use windows, this is what most creators focus on

you are correct, but virus on macs are few are far between and normally a form of direct attack, whilst windows based computers cannot keep up with the constant daily defence definitions demand.

I am windows based myself, but an average and is non technical minded requires fast stable efficient use. Something you don't get from the likes of PC world where you buy a £300 laptop with celeron cpu and install norton 360

mac are costly because they come well equipped and are user friendly
simple things like shared drives are already mapped, wi-fi is zero configuration, install applications require next to no input, start up times are generally quicker.

Could be debated against windows based computers all day long and windows would win...imo but it's really down to the user and what works or not so you have to try before you buy

idd, i am also window based myself, i do sometime use ubuntu on my lappys. i havnt bought a mac yet as i would probably only buy em for more in depth media work...which i dont really do anymore. although i do use them sometimes at uni and sometimes at work (jus set up 4 Apple Mac Pros for our media editing department at work).....but yet to purchase one

haha yh norton is **** :@

idd its down to the user, and in this case the user is asking which to get, from what he/she said they will be using it for.......a cheap pc world windows lappy will do jus fine
