Dave, have a look at this site for in depth reviews

    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD5000/

Morgan computers are doing the 5000 for £400, refurbed with 6 months warranty.

Consider the price of any extra lenses you may want before going for any specific brand.

I have worked my way through the Canon consumer Dxxx range 300/350/400/450, I quite like them, just considering upgrading mine, stuck between the 550 or may go prosumer with a 50D

Make sure you try them out beforehand, some are small and cause discomfort after a while, my only dislike of the Canon Dxxx series.

my VXR history: Arden Corsa, Astra Nurburgring, Corsa Arctic, Evoke VXR8, Black Corsa, Silver Vectra, a long weekend with an Insignia, a chilli burger and now a siggy tourer!
