my son car a astra g 1600 8v . keeps over heating within about 3 miles have look at the rad no leaks or oil in it how else can you tell if the headgasket has gone . only had car a month already had starter motor and ignition switch put on .thanks

For thermostat remove it and put it in your lass's best pan!!!! and bring to the boil. You should see the thermostat open when the water reaches nearly boiling. Once you have done this carefully remove it from the pan and run it under the cold tap. This should then close.
Once you have done this and your sure the water will circulate get the car up to temp and look at the small water return hose on the coolant header / expansion bottle (the one from the top of the radiator). This should constantly return coolant from the top of the Radiator if the water is circulating correctly.
If it doesn't then its either a blocked Rad, Air lock, or dodgy water pump.
